The in-between seasons can affect skin just as much as winter and summer. The only difference is, sometimes we forget this! When it’s not icy cold of blazing hot, we can feel like our skin is taken care of as its not assaulted by the elements in extreme ways. We can relax a little in our skin routine and beauty rituals. We are all about a fuss-free lifestyle, but our skin needs our attention all year round. In spring and autumn/fall, we still need to nourish our skin as it recovers from what has just been and gets ready for the season ahead. In fact, often the prep work we do at these times can see our skin through a snowy winter or a humid summer. You may not need an intensive night cream or lip treatment in these months, but an all-purpose facial oil is perfect for lighter weather.
We all want beautiful skin. Even if you sleep well, drink water, cut caffeine & alcohol, exercise, eat clean & green, cleanse, tone, moisturise – you can still end up with something you don’t like about your skin. These days, social media can make us feel like our skin is flawed. We have to remind ourselves most of what we see online is edited, photoshopped, airbrushed, filtered and often involves a hundred products to get that one shot. We know this, but still, we all want perfect airbrushed-in-real-life skin! There’s redness, dry patches, dark circles, pregnancy pigmentation, hormonal breakouts and those weird giant spots that pop up out of nowhere… welcome to reality and real skin. Through all of these little changes, or issues that can feel like big problems as we struggle to resolve them – we have to love our skin.
Two of the biggest stressors for our skin are the sun, and pollution. We can wear hats and apply SPF for sun protection – protecting against pollution is more complicated. The urban areas we live & work in are usually polluted. Smog from cars, congestion, lack of green spaces all contribute to an environment that is not always skin-friendly. Invisible particles in the air can clog pores, affect skin health and contribute to lines developing. You know when you haven’t binged on junk food or alcohol, you’ve exercised nearly every day and still – you wake up on a Sunday morning with redness or a breakout? Sometimes, pollution is the villain… We can’t do much about the pollution that gets on our skin as we wait for the bus, catch the subway or take a stroll to the neighbourhood park, we can do a lot about getting it off. This is our best defence… remove remove remove!
Genna Di Giovanna is a makeup artist based in New York. She lives a plant-based lifestyle and uses natural products in all aspects of her life, including beauty, health and clothing. It was an obvious choice for us to mesh this natural way of living with the use of natural cosmetics. She recently tried the Ere Perez skincare and makeup and was inspired to create this “natural blush look”. “First things first, skincare. I used the Australian Blue Cypress Face Nectar on clean skin before any makeup is applied. I really love the way this hydrates the skin. I used this first to get the skin looking lush and dewy. After that I used the Quinoa Water foundation – Haze. This foundation is super light. If you’re the type of person that prefers a sheer foundation, I highly recommend this one. Next up, the Arnica Concealer – Latte. This everyday concealer blends nicely into the skin. For my cheeks the Carrot Colour Pot – Harmony pot gave me just enough colour for a natural blush …

She’s inspired by making her clients feel their most beautiful selves, not through makeup but by being enough with or without it. Focusing on nourishing the skin with natural products and face massage. “The reasons I enjoy making people up come from the reactions of my clients… To draw out their inner beauty. I honestly believe everyone is just as beautiful without makeup, I never want to take away the things that make us who we are. Like freckles and beauty spots, even scars are beautiful. They tell a story of our life and I like to work with products that embody this feeling.

To achieve healthy and smooth skin, it is essential to moisturise and hydrate. However, not many of us know that moisturising and hydrating, although often used interchangeably, are actually not the same thing. Hydration comes from within, it refers to the amount of water in the skin. The purpose of hydration is to build moisture from the deepest layers of the skin to keep it radiant, firm and healthy. The same as when we drink water, we do this to hydrate, not moisturise our bodies, right?
